Whoppy's Whinge

Love, life & laughter is all I believe

Welcome to Whoppy’s Whinge – my very first Cyber-Soapbox! I’m a 30-something-ish guy living in Essex with an opinion on virtually everything, and by dumping it all on here (whether or not anyone reads it) hopefully I might stop boring all my friends with my rants - but probably not… Don’t take me too seriously though as no-one else does, and despite all the nasty, horrible things in this world the most important thing in life is to have fun – and, hard as they might try, the tossers in the political elite haven’t quite managed to ban that. Yet!

Annual hitlist

The end of another year, and a great excuse to remind myself of the songs that got me going in 2008. There's definitely an urban bias to it, and one or two slushy ones in there too. If the end of this year's anything to go by then 2009 promises to be another good one!

I'm still here!

It was good to have Gina, Steve & Tommy round Saturday night - it's so nice to cook for people when normally you're on your own, so I hope they enjoyed the meal.

As it often does the subject of blogging came up, and Steve announced that he'd that day removed his link to Whoppy's Whinge - shock horror! Well, I guess I couldn't really complain, given that I've not been on here for the best part of two months!

There are various reasons for my inactivity - moving home again in February and being without broadband for about a month amongst them. More than that, though, my lack of interest in my own and other people's blogs has probably been down to my mental and emotional state. I won't go into detail on what is a public forum other than to say that I am prone to periods of feeling quite down at times, as are lots of my friends in one way or another.

There is hope, though - after all, as Imagination used to sing, happiness is just a state of mind. Now there's a musical flashback!

Toca me in 2008!

With a degree of embarrassment I concede that Mrs M got it right for once - adding Kylie's Wow to my fave songs of the year so far list was something of a bad idea, as it is pretty dire!

However, I'm glad you agreed that driving the long way to the pub the other night was worth it so we could hear the new mix of Toca's Miracle, for which I've found a link - http://www.myspace.com/fragmaofficial. (Scroll down to the beatport player where there are some different mixes.) Toca's Miracle is one of my all time favourites, along with other Fragma songs, so I can't wait to get a legal copy of the 2008 versions to crank up loud!

Another great year for music!

I've finally got around to doing something I've wanted to for a little while, which is to compile a list of my favourite songs from last year. Apart from anything else it'll be a useful reminder at some point of what I liked at the time, and to download any I haven't already got!

The most striking thing about my list is the amount of hip hop and R&B which I enjoyed last year, which is quite a change in music taste for me - though whether that's a reflection on me or on the music I'm not sure. It's probably a bit of both! I'm certainly spending more time these days with MTV Base and less with Dance - who knows what this next year will bring!

Forgotten songs

I've started a new list which, for want of coming up with a more apt title, I'm calling Forgotten Songs. That's actually quite a stupid thing to call it because if they were truly forgotten then I couldn't include them in the list! It's really just a miscellany of mostly one hit wonders that you've probably not heard in years - in many cases since they were first hits, assuming they were - and that, for some reason, have buried themselves in the back of my mind. Quite a few are from the mid 80s and no doubt a shrink would identify a reason for that!

These songs aren't all-time favourites, in fact some of them are quite dire; but hopefully they'll bring back one or two memories!
